Artist Statement
It is by the arrow of desire that I penetrate to the essence of another;
when the essence is touched, desire coalesces into love.
Desire to know is the motivation; eye, hand, mind, and heart are the instruments by which I can enter into the being of the other.
For me, desire is toward the object I am contemplating, whether still life, landscape, or human face and body;
desire is toward the brilliance or softness of pigment, the heft and texture of paper, the dance of brush, the humble vehicle of water.
When I regard my paintings, I can see that in the process of desire
and work something of myself has joined with the essence of the other that I have touched.
Thus, it is a collaborative effort, a mutual give-and-take between me and the object, resulting in a new thing:
the painting itself, a radiant icon of what it is like to be here now, in this moment, gazing into this object,
contemplating this other, head over heels in love.
