Long before she sold her first story at age 14, Maureen Wartski was in love with writing. Inspired by an uncle who gave her a foundation in classical literature, she realized that words were magical things with which to create dissonance or beauty. She has been a high school English teacher, a teacher of writing and writing workshops, and has authored upward of fifty novels including the award-winning YA, A Boat To Nowhere. She has also studied haiku with the noted Japanese haiku poet Aya Nagayama, and enjoys the spare elegance of this difficult discipline. In her water color paintings, Maureen continues to try and capture the essence of what she sees and experiences. She has studied art in Kobe, Japan, Sharon, Massachusetts, and is associated with Art Works the Studio in Raleigh. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in Emerald Isle and Beaufort, NC. She most enjoys painting at her beach house on Emerald Isle, within sound of the sea. Writing and painting deal with color, texture and design. So does fabric. Maureen’s fascination with the written word and with watercolor spills over into her quilting and fabric art. A juxtaposition of different fabrics always offers a unique pattern or presents a challenge. Maureen is not afraid to experiment, to imagine, to try to reach beyond tradition. As in her other media, her quilts capture a moment or tell a new story. email Maureen Wartski |
