I grew up in England where learning the needlearts was part of a young girls' education. I completed my first original tapestry at the age of 12 and at 18 was designing for the handpaint needlpoint industry as a way to make pocket money in college. I was always fascinated by fibers and it wasn't long before I started experimenting with ways to combine stitching, laid work and painting - an art form that (while I wasn't paying attention) came to be known as "mixed media". A Master's Degree later I was still designing for the needlepoint industry and had added teaching technique and stitch classes around the country. Somewhere along the way I discovered the works of american folk art painters and became thoroughly enchanted, incorporating this painting style into my own painted pieces. A love of sporting dogs sent me into yet another direction - competition and ultimately judging pointing breeds in the field. It was quite a natural step to take my painting in the same direction and for some time now I have been painting "dogs in the field" for National Gun Dog clubs and their various memberships. A husband and two children later my life has led me into the realms of being a soccer and tennis mom. Retired now from the needlearts industry I focus my creative endevours on various knitting forms, folk art painting and mixed media, with a class or two thrown in for fun! email Hilary Latimer |
