Photography, Clay, Mixed Media

Using available light in natural settings, I work to interpret and accent the form and nature of my subjects. The way light weaves itself around and through our lives, illuminating the mundane and the spectacular alike fascinates me. Sometimes I am unsure at first what speaks to me in photographic subject. Other times the elements of light and dark evoke a definite mood or provoke a clear thought.

Like characters who choose novelists, my subjects often seem to choose me. Sometimes the subjects I depict are whole and nearly perfect. Other times, I seek to portray the power and strength of survivorship, finding beauty in the imperfect.

While I am intrigued and use some of the extensive creative potential that digital imaging offers, for me the challenge of finding subjects and staying open to happy accidents excites and stretches me artistically. Also, I still relish working with film and traditional prints. When I hand-color black and white prints with oil paints and pencils I feel an intimacy with the image that is different from and more satisfying than working with pixels.

More than 20 years ago, I began making photographs with a Nikon 35mm film system. I now use Nikon equipment and a Hasselblad camera for my work with film. In addition, I photograph extensively with Canon digital SLR cameras.

Recently I began hand-building with clay and exploring the artistic possibilities of bamboo and mixed media. The textures, shapes and other characteristics of these materials enhance and add new dimensions to my creative work.
