Carol studied art with Helga Brown, a watercolorist from New Jersey, and while living in Manhattan, at the Art Student League. While at the Art Student League she studied with John Groth, artist/illustrator and war correspondent. John was her friend and mentor. He encouraged her to paint in an expressionist style. He wanted her to bring more emotion to her art, be it comical, whimsical or dramatic. Carol is best known for her whimsical pig and cow paintings, now known as “Kitchen Art”. One of her pig paintings was chosen to hang in the Art Student League gallery in New York City. The painting was sold this year to a local resident. In 1980 Carol opened the Packhouse Studio in Westfield, North Carolina. The Packhouse was a 200 year old restored tobacco barn devoted to the arts. The studio sponsored art classes and workshops in conjunction with the Stokes County Art’s Council. Mr. Groth visited several times a year and conducted classes as did other artists. The farm also had artists in residence. Carol had a one woman show at the Stokes County Arts council in 1997, and has recently been studying with Linda Marion a portrait artist from Pilot Mountain. She can be reached through the Art and Soul Gallery or by phone at 336-408-0164 and 919-310-6364. email Carol Engler |
